Chennai Citizen Connect: Ill-maintained Perambur High Road footpath puts pedestrians in trouble

The affected stretch lies on both sides of Perambur High Road, beginning near the school and extending up to the Cooks Road junction

CHENNAI: The condition of footpaths along a stretch of Perambur High Road, near Jamalia Higher Secondary School, and also adjacent to the office of Chennai Mayor Priya, has raised concerns among residents, presidents and daily commuters, with several portions remaining broken and inaccessible.

The affected stretch lies on both sides of Perambur High Road, beginning near the school and extending up to the Cooks Road junction. Parents accompanying schoolchildren, senior citizens and persons with disabilities are among those most affected, locals pointed out.

The footpaths are marked by cracked concrete slabs, uneven surfaces and encroachments, leaving little continuous walking space. As a result, pedestrians are often compelled to step onto the carriageway to navigate the area, increasing the risk of accidents on this busy road.

Residents said the poor condition of the footpaths has remained unchanged for several months.

Speaking to DT Next, ward councillor M Saravanan said that the issue had already been taken up with the Greater Chennai Corporation.

“We have placed a request earlier to relay the footpath and submitted it to the Mayor. The proposal is currently under consideration,” he said.

Another councillor added that road works are being taken up in the area and that the footpaths would be re-laid once those works are completed.
