CHENNAI: Five construction workers suffered injuries after the cable of a temporary lift they were standing on snapped and fell from a height of around 15 feet at Kalaignar Centenary Park on Cathedral Road on Friday evening.

The workers were engaged in constructing a nine-storey 'Super Tree' inside the park premises, police sources said.

They used the lift to transport glass materials when the cable reportedly snapped due to excess load, causing them to fall from the second level.

The injured were Mariyappan (48), Ganesan (51), Mohan (38), Mahendran (48) and Sampathkumar (47). All five had been staying in the city for the past 15 days for the project. They were rushed to a private hospital by site engineer Jayamurugan, where they are undergoing treatment. Further inquiry is ongoing.
