CHENNAI: The Koyambedu police have arrested two men for allegedly snatching a bag containing Rs. 45.68 lakh from a collection agent after chasing him on a two-wheeler and threatening him with a knife.

Narayanan (35) of Chinmaya Nagar works as a collection agent for a vegetable shop owner at Koyambedu market and collects money from shops in Koyambedu and Parry's Corner.

The incident happened on September 22 when Narayanan was travelling from Parry's Corner with the day's collection of Rs 45.68 lakh. As he was nearing Koyambedu, two men on a bike hit his vehicle. As Narayanan fell, the duo snatched his bag and fled. The collection agent then chased the duo and cornered them near Ganga Nagar in Maduravoyal.

The suspects brandished a knife to threaten him and once again fled the scene, but this time they abandoned their vehicle and escaped on foot with the money bag.

Narayanan then filed a complaint, based on which a case was registered, and a team led by the Inspector from Koyambedu police station launched the search for the suspects.

The accused were identified as Ayyappan alias Ramesh (24) and Haja Moideen (26), both from Tirunelveli. The police have seized the two-wheeler used in the crime and three mobile phones from the suspects.

Interrogation revealed that Ayyappan, Haja Moideen, and their associates had allegedly planned the robbery after learning about Narayanan's cash collection routine. It was also discovered that Ayyappan works for a private company in Broadway, while Haja Moideen works as a substitute driver in Pozhichallur.
