CHENNAI: Two women cleanliness workers were hospitalised after suffering an electric shock while cleaning a road in the Chintadripet area on Monday night. The incident occurred near Tarapore Tower on Anna Salai.

The victims are Varalakshmi K (42) of Tollgate and Kalaivani A (36) of Annai Sathya Nagar, Rajaji Salai. They were employed by a private firm for the past seven months as cleanliness workers.

According to preliminary reports, the duo had reported for duty at 10 pm on Monday. While engaged in cleaning work near the central median on Anna Salai, they accidentally came into contact with an electrified street light pole, which caused them to sustain shocks.

Fellow workers at the spot immediately alerted emergency services. Both women were rushed to the Government Omandar Hospital via a 108 ambulance, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Following the incident, the Chintadripet police informed the local Tangedco office, and officials promptly disconnected the power supply to the affected pole to prevent any further accidents.

Hospital authorities have reported that both victims are now stable and have not sustained any major injuries. Consequently, they have indicated that no further legal action is required at this stage.
