According to a senior city police official, it’s a procedure to probe all encounter killings by a separate agency like CB-CID than the police involved in the killing, to ensure an impartial probe.

City police had claimed that the encounter killing was an act of self-defence by a police team led by Ayanavaram inspector of police, Natarajan after the deceased ‘Market’ Shankar attacked one of the constables in the police team with a sickle.

Shankar had three murder cases and five non-bailable warrants pending against him.

The family members had received the body of Shankar after they were told that a CB-CID probe will be carried out into the encounter killing.
