The CB-CID has taken over the investigation of alleged sexual assault of a woman Dalit PhD scholar from Chennai police.

Chennai: The move came even as the city police reportedly approached the court to quash the anticipatory bails of the accused and amid rumours that three of them have already fled the country.

The city police recently went to West Bengal to arrest the main accused Kingshuk Debsharma, but the local court let him off on bail as they had violated the conditions of his anticipatory bail.

The CB-CID probe into the matter was one of the key demands of All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) which recently took up the matter after learning that the FIR registered by the city police was gathering dust for about nine months.

The victim lodged a complaint at Kotturpuram police station in March last year alleging sexual assault by her colleagues since 2017, but a case was registered in June.

After AIDWA took up the matter, the city police received a fresh plaint from the victim and included SC/AT Act in the case.
