Body of missing driver recovered after car plunges into sea at Chennai Port

CHENNAI:The body of the car driver who was feared to be drowned after the car he was driving fell into the sea, at Chennai Harbour on Tuesday night, was recovered on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Mohammed Shahi (33), of Kodungaiyur. He was a temporary chauffeur for a Coast Guard officer, and the incident occurred when Shahi was taking the Coast Guard Officer from the port to Jawahar Dock-5 in a Tavera vehicle. The vehicle slipped into the 85-foot-deep water at Chennai Harbour on Tuesday night.

While the fire personnel recovered the car on Wednesday, the rescue team officials fished out the body of the missing driver on Thursday.

The Coast Guard officer Jogendra Kanda, who was also inside the vehicle, managed to break the windshield and swim, though he later fainted. The deceased driver Shahi remained trapped in the vehicle as it sank to a depth of 85 feet.
