CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation’s first boating facilities at Madhavaram and Manali lakes, located on either side of Kamarajar Salai in Manali, will open to the public by Tuesday after trial runs conducted on Saturday turned out to be successful.
The civic body has tied up with the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) to extend the boating facilities and other tourist amenities in the twin lakes restored at the cost of Rs 63 crore.
According to the GCC, Manali Lake spans 29 acres, while Madhavaram Lake covers 66 acres. Children’s play areas, parks, seating arrangements, walkways, handrails, lighting, toilet facilities and other amenities are being developed at both lakes.
An official of the TTDC said Manali Lake will have 13 boats and jet skis, while Madhavaram Lake will have 16 boats. A ticket counter, a small food court or snack bar and a first-aid room have also been provided for the public.
A GCC official said a new 1.8 km walkway would be constructed around Manali Lake, while an 800-metre footpath with play areas will be created at Madhavaram Lake. Saplings have been planted along the lake shores, and scientific structures have been put in place to prevent soil erosion.
GCC Manali zone chairperson AV Arumugam said the facility would benefit more than 1.30 lakh people in the zone. “From a miscreants’ den, the lake has become a recreational space for the public,” he said.
