It looks like even the beggars are not safe during the COVID-19 lockdown as desperate criminals have now started targeting vagrants sleeping on the roadside.

A bike-borne gang allegedly robbed at least two beggars and a fruit vendor sleeping on North Mada Street in Mylapore at knifepoint besides snatching away cash from a security guard of a jewellery shop on the same road on Sunday night.

Police sources identified the victims of the bike-borne gang as Sankaran, 65, and Kanniyammal, 65, both beggars; Masilamani, an amla vendor; and security guard Thirunavukkarasu.

“The two attacked all their victims with a knife, injuring them in the process, and took whatever cash they had. The duo took all the coins from Sankaran, a small cloth wallet with nearly Rs 150 from Kanniyammal and Rs 70 from the guard,” police sources said.

Sankaran and Kanniyammal took treatment from Royapettah government hospital, while Thirunavukkarasu has been admitted to Rajiv Gandhi government general hospital, sources said.
