According to police at Kotturpuram station, where a case has been registered based on the complaint, the letter reached the office of MK Surappa on October 22. The sender had identified himself as Veerappan without mentioning his address.

The letter threatened to eliminate Surappa unless he withdrew his letter to the Central government endorsing the move to grant the ‘Institute of Eminence’ (IoE) status to the university. The State government had earlier said Surappa had unilaterally written to the Centre on the subject and distanced itself from the move.

The government also said it is not in favour of the seeking the IoE status and as of now the process is on hold.

The Kotturpuram police registered a case against an ‘unknown sender’ under IPC section Sections 507 (Criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) and 506 (ii) (Punishment for criminal intimidation).

The city police officer said they have received proper legal opinion and only then registered a case. Further investigations are on to find out the sender of the threatening letter.
