Airman kills self at Avadi airforce station while on duty

CHENNAI: A 22-year-old man serving at the Air Force station in Avadi allegedly shot himself to death while on duty on Wednesday evening.

Preliminary investigations suggested that he was upset as he could not find time to prepare for exams to become an officer in the Air Force.

The deceased has been identified as Nirav Chauhan, a native of Kodinar town in Gir somnath district, Gujarat.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Nirav Chauhan completed his training on August 21 and has since been posted at Air force station in Avadi.

Police said that Nirav was posted on security detail near the main entrance gate on Wednesday. Around 4 pm, Nirav took the service weapon he was having and shot himself, police sources said.

Other personnel on duty rushed to his rescue on hearing the gunshots and took him to a hospital nearby, where he was declared brought dead.

Muthialpet Police recovered the body on information and moved it to Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital for autopsy. Investigations are under way to find out if there are other reasons behind Nirav Chavan taking the extreme step.
