He was a pioneer of modern Tamil poetry and is considered one of the greatest Tamil literary figures of all times.

Subramanya Bharathi was born in 1882 in a cosy settlement named Ettayapuram in the Thoothukudi district. He spent the later half of his eventful life at Bharathiyar Illam. Original manuscripts belonging to the poet, photographs featuring him with his family and friends are displayed at Bharathiyar Illam.

The chief attention at Bharathiyar Illam is the letter from Mahatma Gandhi written in praise of the great poet on the auspicious occasion of the inauguration of the Bharathiyar Mani Mandapam.
