‘944 abandoned persons rescued from Chennai streets’

Chennai City police have rescued 944 abandoned persons of all age groups since April as part of its Kaval Karangal initiative, said a note from Greater Chennai Police on Tuesday.

Under the initiative, undertaken in collaboration with governmental and non-profit organisations, physically and mentally ill persons, mostly senior citizens, women and children, living on the pavements are rescued and are given necessary medical support and nutritious food at different homes. Of the 944 persons, 63 were reunited with their families, while 60 persons have been admitted at the Institute of Mental Health. The note added that 130 persons died at the care homes, and were given a decent burial.
