A Chennai Corporation official said that during the field visits, he came to know that the areas such as Velachery, KK Nagar, T Nagar, Mylapore, Broadway and Ashok Nagar have a higher demand for multilevel car parking facilities.

“Of the identified 62 locations, 25 locations will have special developments with spaces for commercial and parking purposes,” the official added. As the locations are identified, the civic body would float tenders inviting private consultants to prepare Detailed Project Reports (DPR).

The civic body has taken up the project after the government announced off-street parking facilities in the several parts of the city at a cost of Rs 2,000 Crore.

Even though the Chennai Corporation intends to carry out the project with public-private partnership, the project would be implemented with government funds if private companies do not show interest to take up the project.
