While people are continuing to send their requests, only those requesting to attend the wedding, funeral of a family member or travel on medical emergencies are being considered, said Deputy Commissioner H Jayalakshmi. Another officer said that most applications were from youngsters who hail from other towns and are stuck in the city.

They are seeking permits, eager to return to their hometown. However, such applications would not be entertained, said officials.

The city police had announced on Saturday that they have set up a control room to issue emergency travel permit in order to avoid being stopped by police personnel posted at every district and state borders, as Section 144 of CrPC has been promulgated to restrict people movement due to the coronavirus pandemic.
