50 personnel deployed to fight fire at oil godown

Hundreds of barrels of oil in a godown in two acres of land in Gummidipoondi Sipcot industrial estate went up in flames on Friday. A thick blanket of smoke covered the areas around it in the afternoon.

Over 50 firefighters struggled to bring the fire under control till late evening. Fire tenders from Sipcot, Gummidipoondi, Athipattu, Thervoy Kandigai, Ponneri and Red Hills stations were pressed to service.

The godown belongs to a private firm engaged in purifying oil and sending the waste generated for the construction of roads and mixing of concrete.

The cause of the fire is not known yet. No casualties have been reported since the company was closed due to the lockdown. The accident site is located far from the residential area. But the police had to remove the people who gathered to watch the fire.
