5-member gang from AP arrested for mobile snatching in Chennai

Police formed special teams to nab the accused based on a series of complaints.

CHENNAI: City Police on Sunday arrested a five-member gang from Andhra Pradesh, including an elderly woman and a teenager, who targeted passengers near Egmore railway station and stole mobile phones.

Recently, on September 24, M Gilders (50) of Pudupet, who was standing outside the Egmore railway station, was robbed of his mobile phone under knifepoint by a four member gang.

The same night, the gang had also stealthily stolen the mobile phone of one, M Senthil Kumar (42).

Based on CCTV footage, police zeroed in on the suspects and nabbed them on Sunday.

The arrested persons were identified as A Rajesh (27), R Santosh (26), J Kanagaraj (36), S Madhu (19) and T Yashoda (60). All of them are natives of west Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh.

Police secured seven mobile phones from the gang. They were produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.

Police also secured a minor boy along with the gang. He was sent to a government home for boys.
