The accused, J Sakthivel, worked as a maintenance staffer at an apartment in Mylapore while his wife Sujitha (33) was employed with a matrimonial organisation. Police said that Sakthivel suspected that his wife had an affair with one Balaji, while Sujitha had indeed borrowed a loan of Rs 1 lakh from him pledging her land in Vandavasi. Since she needed another Rs 50,000 to run the family, she approached Balaji again, but the latter allegedly insisted that he sees the property before giving the money.

However, Sakthivel, who came to know about it, got into an argument with her. Sujitha’s brother Sudhakar visited the house on Thursday to bring about a rapprochement between the two, but Sakthivel quarrelled with them and suddenly attacked both with two kitchen knives before fleeing the spot.

Sujitha and her brother were admitted to a private hospital, and on information, Madipakkam police registered a case and arrested Sakthivel on Saturday. He was booked for attempted murder and remanded in judicial custody.
