CHENNAI: More than 46.7 crore passengers have used the Metro since services began in June 2015, with 2025 emerging as the busiest year so far, according to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL).

Ridership data shows a steady post-pandemic recovery and consistent growth over the last three years. After disruptions during the COVID-19 period, the Metro carried 6.09 crore passengers in 2022, which increased to 9.11 crore in 2023.

Usage crossed the 10 crore mark in 2024. In 2025 alone, 11.19 crore passengers used the Metro, the highest annual ridership recorded since operations began. The data also underlines the growing use of digital ticketing.
