The injured were identified as Ramakrishnan (50), a farmer and Govindammal (70) from Anumanthapuram village and are said to be out of danger. Police sources said that the object was picked up by Ramakrishnan from a shooting range used by police, CRPF and the Paramilitary force for training purposes in Anumanthapuram village near his farmland.
According to sources, every time after the training got over, the villagers collected waste metals from the ground and sold them to scrap shops. However, no training was held in the ground for the past few months. On Tuesday afternoon, Ramakrishnan had noticed a huge metal object on the ground, picked it up and headed towards a scrap shop on his two-wheeler. When traveling on the Puliyamaram Thopu Road, the object fell from the two-wheeler and burst. As a result, Ramakrishnan suffered injuries and the broken pieces hit the chest of Govindammal who runs an ironing stall on the roadside.
On information the Maraimalai Nagar police rushed to the spot and both of them were taken to the Chenagalpattu Government Hospital. The Chengalpattu SP D Kannan visited the spot and conducted inquiry. The broken pieces of the mysterious object were sent to the lab for testing and police are waiting for the report to identify the object.
The SP said that the object which Ramakrishnan picked up might be used for training purposes earlier since no training was held recently. On Tuesday night, police on suspicion along with bomb squad, checked Ramakrishnan’s house in Anumanthapuram and recovered many used and unused explosives. The police has sent the explosives for testing and further inquiry is on.
