2 contract workers critical after electric shock during SWD work

CHENNAI: Three contract workers engaged in the construction of the stormwater drains in the city sustained burn injuries after they came in contact with an electric wire on Friday night.

They are being treated at Kilpauk Medical College Hospital (KMCH), police said. The injured labourers were identified as B Arun Kumar (27), from Villupuram, C Kannan (50), from Kolathur and S Balamurugan (35) from Arakkonam.

Police said that Arun Kumar and Kannan suffered more than 50 % burn injuries and are in critical condition while Balamurugan suffered 23% burn injuries.

Contract workers were involved in digging and replacing concrete slabs in Thirumalai Nagar in ICF near UCO Bank when the incident happened, police said.

The incident happened around 8 pm. Based on a complaint, ICF police registered a case and booked contract head R Parthasarathy (65), supervisor R Panneerselvam, (42) on charges of negligence and are investigating.
