141 kg Gutkha seized: Father-son duo arrested in Chennai

CHENNAI: Chennai city police on Thursday arrested a father-son duo for smuggling in Gutkha -- a banned tobacco product in the State. Elephant gate police have seized at least 141 kg of Gutkha products from their godown.

The arrested persons have been identified as P Surendar Shaw (51) and his son, S Dhanraj Kumar (19) of Sowcarpet.

On Thursday, police had received a tip off about a consignment of Gutkha products arriving to Chennai by train.

Police teams kept vigil near parcel offices on Wall Tax road near Chennai Central railway station.

They noted a group of four men loading sacks onto two-wheelers and a load auto and on suspicion, tried to apprehend them.

Two of them managed to flee while the father son duo were caught with the Gutkha products.

Further investigations with them led police to a godown in Kondithope where police recovered 141 kg of Gutkha products.

The two of them were produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
