Tourist Family, Gevi join Oscars race

Helmed by debutant Abishan Jeevinth, Tourist Family was celebrated among both fans and critics, and had a great theatrical run.

CHENNAI: Much to the delight of Tamil cinema fans, Sasikumar-starrer Tourist Family has entered the Oscar Awards list of contentions for the Best Picture category. Gripping survival drama Gevi has also joined the list. Earlier, Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: Chapter 1, Mahavtar Narsimha and Tanvi The Great entered the list.

Helmed by debutant Abishan Jeevinth, Tourist Family was celebrated among both fans and critics, and had a great theatrical run. The film also stars Simran, MS Bhaskar, Yogi Babu, Mithun Jay Shankar, Kamalesh and Ramesh Thilak. A feel-good family entertainer, Million Dollar Studios and MRP Entertainment produced the film. The film hit the screens in theatres on May 1 and had an OTT premiere on JioHotstar.

Meanwhile, directed by Tamil Dhayalan and produced by Artuptriangles Film Kampany, Gevi is inspired by true events. The film is set against the rugged landscapes of the Western Ghats and tells a compelling story of survival and the fight for justice. The film has been successfully uploaded to the Academy Screening Room (ASR).

Producer Jagan Jayasurya said, “As the producer of Gevi, I believe the film possesses the scale, craft, and emotional resonance that align strongly with the Academy’s Best Picture sensibilities. The film’s reception to date has reinforced our confidence that it can compete meaningfully at the highest level, and we are now seeking to engage in a focused, well-structured awards campaign.”

The Academy is expected to announce the final contending films on January 22.
