CHENNAI: A lawyer made an urgent mention on Monday before the Madras High Court seeking a ban on the screening of the movie 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge' in Tamil Nadu in view of the upcoming Assembly elections in the State.

The movie starring Ranveer Singh and directed by Aditya Dhar was released in theatres worldwide on March 19, 2026, and is currently running in theatres across India. The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections are scheduled to be held on April 23.

The Model Code of Conduct came into force in the state following the March 15 announcement made by the Election Commission regarding the Assembly Election.

In this context, advocate Sheela submitted before a High Court Bench comprising Chief Justice SA Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan that the film deals with political themes and contains allegedly biased political commentary.

The counsel therefore urged that the film should not be screened in the state while the Model Code of Conduct is in force for the elections, adding that it may be exhibited after the completion of the polling process.

The Bench observed that the film has already been released and directed the counsel to file an appropriate petition and then mention the matter before the Court.

Produced by Jio Cinemas, the movie is part of the spy-thriller duology with themes such as demonetisation, among others. Many Gulf Cooperation Council countries have banned the movie.
