The trailer of Rishi Richard’s Draupathi took the internet by storm on January 1 and has clocked over 2 million views on YouTube. The film that is set in the backdrop of North Chennai talks about intercaste marriages, land acquisition and many other current issues. Netizens took to Twitter and commented that there were a few insults intended at the oppressed community and called out director Mohan for the same. When we reached out to him, he said, “People have jumped to the conclusion looking at the trailer. Draupathi is a film that is based on real life incidents. We didn’t intend to insult any specific caste or community through the film. The crux of the story revolves around fake marriage rackets that took place in the north Chennai neighbourhood of Royapuram in the last decade.”
Mohan also clarified that people of different strata of the society have different shades to them. “There is good and bad everywhere in the society. It doesn’t belong to one section of the society and there is no need for anybody to go on a rage without knowing the issue we have dealt with in the film,” he added.
Helmed by Mohan G of Pazhaya Vannarapettai fame, Draupathi is a crowdfunded film that has Sheela, Karunas, Nishanth, Soundarya, Lena, Seshu, Aaru Bala, Jeeva Ravi, Ilango and Gopinath among others.
