Reporter’s diary: Prodigies inspire young and old

A few months ago, this scribe got the chance to speak with Praggnanandhaa, a chess prodigy who became the second youngest Grandmaster in the world at 12. He astonished us with his calm demeanour and single-minded focus on the game.

His parents and coaches also spoke highly of his dedication and the relentless hours that go into the makings of a chess champion. In a city that calls Viswananathan Anand her son and one where the chess thrives, it must take a special mix of talent and hard work to emerge as one to be reckoned with at such a young age.

At another assignment, this reporter met with a young debating team that won silver at the prestigious World Schools Debating Championship in Croatia. Three of the five members were from Chennai. The self-assurance of the young champs who spoke lucidly, as would expect of ace debaters, of their preparation for the competition and their hopes and dreams for the future left the reporters yearning to turn the clock back a few years!

Then came three year old Sanjana, who on Independence Day set out to claim a Guinness World Record for most number of arrows shot in one sitting.

Each of these assignments brought this scribe a sense of elation that we such unparalleled talent in our midst. The parents and coaches reiterated the enthusiasm of the participants as the reason they were able to achieve these feats. Straddling the two is something our young prodigies seem to be doing well. That’s the message that must reach everyone aspiring for greatness at all ages.
