Zia, 72, was sentenced in February by the Special Court-5 in Dhaka in connection with the embezzlement of 21million takas (USD 252,000) in foreign donations meant for the Zia Orphanage Trust.

She is currently serving the sentence at the central jail.

After she fell sick last Thursday, the government had formed a four-member medical team comprising four professors of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka Tribune reported.

M Shamsuzzaman Shahinas, who is heading the team, yesterday said that they have added several more medicines alongside the ones Zia currently takes for her ailments, the report said.

"We have also recommended some tests for her. The prison authorities will have them conducted. We have also advised her to do physical exercise. Although she is sick, her condition is not critical," Shahinas said.

"She (Khaleda) told us that she has been experiencing pain on her neck, limbs and waist," said the doctor.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said that Zia is "physically sound" in jail but she has been suffering from some chronic diseases, Daily Star reported.

“Khaleda Zia is in jail as per directives by the court. She is getting all the facilities according to the jail code," the minister said.

Meanwhile, BNP demanded the release of its chairperson from jail.
