Rajapaksa calls for fresh elections

Failing to prove his majority twice, controversial Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on Sunday demanded holding snap parliamentary polls to end the ongoing political crisis in the country.

The island nation is witnessing a political crisis since President Maithripala Sirisena’s controversial move to sack Prime Minister Ranil Wickeremesinghe and install Rajapaksa in his place on October 26.

Sirisena later dissolved Parliament, almost 20 months before its term was to end, and ordered a snap election. The Supreme Court overturned Sirisena’s decision to dissolve Parliament and halted the preparations for snap polls.  Rajapaksa has, so far, failed to prove his majority in

Parliament.

Wickremesinghe, with the support from the main Tamil party, claims to have the support of more than 113 legislators, required for simple majority.  Speculation is rife that Sirisena may remove Rajapaksa on Wednesday when another motion would be taken up in Parliament and is defeated. Following the vote, Sirisena would be forced to appoint a new Prime Minister and a Cabinet.

MEA officials to be questioned on crisis

Top officials of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) will brief a parliamentary panel on India-Sri Lanka relations, and they may be questioned on the current political crisis in the neighbouring island nation and its impact on New Delhi, sources said.
