Senior police official AKM Alamgir Jahan told reporters that six people were also injured in the accident that took place at about 7 a.m., reports Xinhua news agency.

He said the train bound for Rajshahi city rammed into the passenger bus at the manually-operated crossing.

According to the official, 10 bodies were recovered from the spot.

Eight wounded people were rushed to local hospitals, where two of them succumbed to their injuries, Jahan added.

Shariful Islam, Joypurhat district administration chief, said that the tragic accident took place due to the gatekeeper's sheer negligence in performing his duty.

"We've come to know that the gatekeeper was sleeping at the time of the accident," he said.
