Youth killed as granite lorry topples

The lorry carrying several kilos of granite was on its way to Tiruvallur from Chittoor in AP.

TIRUVALLUR: In a tragic road accident, a 20-year-old youth died when a granite loaded lorry he was travelling in met with an accident and turned turtle near Tiruvallur on Monday. Four others were injured and granite worth Rs 5 lakh was destroyed. The victim was identified as Ashiq, a labourer from Andhra Pradesh.

The lorry carrying several kilos of granite was on its way to Tiruvallur from Chittoor in AP. The vehicle was driven by Mohan (40) and three labourers Ashiq, Ashfaq and Vijay along with contractors Srinivasan and Rahim were seated in the lorry along with granite slabs. Early on Monday, a private bus, coming in the opposite direction, sped towards the lorry at high speed. “Mohan swerved to left to avert it. Unfortunately, the lorry lost balance and hit a tree and turned turtle,” police said. Granite slabs slid from the vehicle and crushed Ashiq to death.
