2 killed, 2 injured in cracker unit explosion near Srivilliputhur

MADURAI: Two workers were killed and two others suffered burn injuries in an explosion at the Mayathevanpatti cracker manufacturing unit near Srivilliputhur in Virudhunagar district on Wednesday.

The deceased have been identified as Karthi (35) of Kunnur village and Pullakutti (55) of Nagapalayam village, sources said. The injured were Bose (35) of Thiruvengadapuram and Manikandan (31) of Vadapatti. They are being treated at Sivakasi Government Hospital.

The explosion is said to have occurred while the workers were taking away chemical mixtures meant for fireworks manufacturing from a room.

While the charred remains of a victim were found near the storage room, the other victim’s body was ripped into three pieces. The blast hurled the body about 50 meters away.

Officials from the Departments of Revenue and Police inspected the accident site and held enquiries.

Based on a complaint lodged by Priya Roopavathi, Nalli Village Administrative Officer, the Nalli police have filed a case against owner Jeyaraj and a foreman of the unit, sources said.
