CHENNAI: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) functionary Ajitha Agnel who was hospitalised after she consumed sleeping pills was shifted to intensive care earlier on Saturday (December 27), after her health worsened.

Ajitha was reportedly upset over not getting the post of Thoothukudi Central district secretary and consumed around 15 sleeping pills at her residence in Thoothukudi on Thursday, after which she was rushed by family members to a private hospital. She was under treatment but her condition deteriorated today, leading to her being moved to the ICU, according to Thanthi TV.

The incident comes days after TVK chief Vijay had appointed Samuel Raj as the Thoothukudi Central district secretary on December 23. Ajitha had openly opposed the appointment, claiming Samuel had not been actively involved in party work and that she, having worked consistently for the party, deserved the post.

Ajitha, along with her supporters, later staged a protest at the TVK headquarters in Panaiyur, intercepting Vijay's car and later sitting in a dharna outside the office.
