Tiruchy BHEL GM dies by suicide after opening fire on himself

They informed the Boiler Plant police who reached the spot and send the body to Tiruchy GH for postmortem. The police also recovered a locally made pistol from the site.

TIRUCHY: BHEL General Manager died by suicide by turning a gun on himself in the office premises early on Wednesday. M Shanmugam (50), GM (Seamless Steel Tube Plant) at BHEL, Tiruchy, did not return home even after office hours. His wife’s calls went unanswered. Subsequently, she contacted the office on Wednesday early morning.

When some employees went to his office to check on him, they found that the office room was locked from inside. They broke open the doors and found Shanmugam lying dead on the sofa with a bullet injury on his forehead.

They informed the Boiler Plant police who reached the spot and send the body to Tiruchy GH for postmortem. The police also recovered a locally made pistol from the site.

According to sources, Shanmugam was suffering from cardiac-related problems for the past few years. Shanmugam, son of a former BHEL employee, is survived by his wife and daughter, who is pursuing her BTech.

On Tuesday evening, Shanmugam held an interactive session with the BHEL employees and was his usual jovial self, the sources said.
