COIMBATORE: A truck owner and driver were booked for submitting forged insurance documents in a road accident case in Coimbatore.

Police said Prakash (44), a native of Thiruchendur in Thoothukudi district, was riding a moped with his relative in pillion, during a visit to Coimbatore in 2014, when a lorry rammed his vehicle from behind at Lorrypet near Ukkadam.

In the impact of the mishap, they were thrown off the two-wheeler and sustained severe injuries. The duo were then admitted to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) for treatment.

The Traffic Investigation Wing-West (TIW) registered a case, which later came up for hearing before the Coimbatore Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal. During the proceedings, the court directed the truck owner to pay appropriate compensation to the victims through insurance.

However, as the compensation was not disbursed, Prakash approached the insurance firm for clarification and got to know that the truck owner had submitted forged insurance documents. It was due to fake policy documents that the insurance firm did not process the compensation claim.

Based on a complaint by Prakash, the Coimbatore police registered a case against truck owner Maheswaran and driver Thennarasu on charges of cheating.

A police official said that an inquiry is underway for action against the TIW Inspector and the Regional Transport Officer (RTO) for allegedly failing to verify the insurance documents during earlier proceedings.
