CHENNAI: At least 65 buffaloes stashed inside a single truck with no ventilation got a chance to live, when the cattle were rescued from cruelty and trafficking by an animal activist on Thursday night. Police filed an FIR against those who transported the animal for slaughter without licence.
Dr Shiranee Pereira of People for Animals said, "We spotted the animals hung by a rope with a noose around his /her neck- to ensure that they stand all through the journey and their tired legs can never rest as they would travel with no food or water for days. Of which one of them collapsed and after providing fluid therapy the animal is doing fine."
Arambakkam Police Station ( TN - Andhra border) seized the 12-wheeler truck which transported 65 buffaloes from Andhra Pradesh to Kerala via Tamil Nadu for slaughter. The rescued animals join a big family of 800 animals and birds at the activist shelter - The Jinendra Jeevdaya Kendra - in Tiruvallur.
Though the State has legal slaughterhouses, which follows the norms issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India issues license to these places to slaughter and deliver meat.
"When animals are transported to legal slaughterhouses, a truck should have six cattle. And, the driver should provide the license issued by the government. Also, animals below 12 years are slaughtered due to a steady increase in demand. The government should ensure strict action is implemented to prevent such cruelty act against the animals," G Arun Prasanna, Secretary, People for Cattle in India said.
Animal activists urged the Tamil Nadu State Animal welfare board will take serious cognisance of such by cases horrific animal cruelty and urgent proactive steps to put a complete end to the brutality of inter-state cattle trafficking in South India through Tamil Nadu.
