Drawing the attention of Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar to an “unprovoked conflict” between Indian fishermen and Lankan Navy near Katchatheevu on October 18, DMK Parliamentary party leader TR Baalu also requested the Minister’s assistance to provide compensation for the loss suffered by Indian fishermen during the attack by Lankan navy. In his letter to the Union Minister, Baalu said the fishermen of Rameswaram were in deep anguish and shattered due to the loss of their fishing equipment worth Rs 20 lakh during the October 18 conflict with Lankan Navy. “While they (fishermen) are already subjected to many other unavoidable vulnerabilities, many cases of fishermen arrests, attacks and chasing by the Sri Lankan Navy worsen their plight now and then,” he added.
