TN sanctions Rs 20 crore for pre-monsoon preparedness work

As part of the pre-monsoon preparedness work, the WRD are instructed to clear the debris, silt, weed, blockages before the onset of Northeast monsoon in Tamil Nadu to enable free flow of water in the waterways to avoid inundation and to manage floods.

CHENNAI: Ahead of Northeast Monsoon, the State government sanctioned Rs 20 crore for pre-monsoon preparedness work for the year 2022-2023 in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Cuddalore districts of Tamil Nadu, as per the government order.

"The major waterways in Chennai such as Cooum River, Adyar River, Buckingham Canal, Otteri Nullah, Virugambakkam Canal, and river mouth and flood carrier drains in Cuddalore district which are been maintained by the Water Resources Department (WRD). The major reasons for inundation, spread of epidemic diseases during the seasonal rainfall are due to solid waste and debris dumped," read the GO.

As part of the pre-monsoon preparedness work, the WRD are instructed to clear the debris, silt, weed, blockages before the onset of Northeast monsoon in Tamil Nadu to enable free flow of water in the waterways to avoid inundation and to manage floods.

During the monsoon 2021, 95 numbers of pre-monsoon preparedness work were sanctioned for a total cost of Rs 1,170 lakh. This year, around 122 works will be carried out over Palar Basin circle in Chennai and Vellar basin circle in Cuddalore.
