TIRUCHY: The Thanjavur special court on Monday acquitted the present state minister, MP, and MLA in the case of a series of protests against the jallikattu ban.

After the then-union government banned the Tamil Nadu cultural game of jallikattu, there were widespread protests across the state by people from various walks of life.

As a part of the protest, on January 20, 2017, the DMK cadres headed by the present Rajya Sabha member S Kalyanasundaram in Kumbakonam. Kumbakonam West police registered a case against the present minister, Govi Chezhiaan, Kalyanasundaram, MLA Sakkottai G Anbalagan, Kumbakonam Deputy Mayor S Tamilalagan and KN Selvaraj.

The case was in progress with the special court in Thanjavur. The hearing of the case had concluded on January 8, and the judgment was postponed to Monday (January 19).

Accordingly, on Monday, the persons charged in the case, except Selvaraj, who passed away in the course of the case, appeared before the court, and the judge acquitted all persons, citing that there was a lack of documents related to the case.
