CHENNAI: Senior officials of the Tamil Nadu Labour Welfare and Skill Development Department camped in New Delhi on Tuesday to convince the Union government to support the State's tweaking of the BJP-led NDA regime's flagship labour codes.
The officials would explain the State government’s draft labour rules, framed in lieu of the four new labour codes proposed by the Union government, citing sensitivities required for Tamil Nadu.
The official delegation included K Veera Raghava Rao, Secretary to the Government; SA Raman, Director of Labour; and B Vishnu Chandran, Commissioner of Employment and Training. The team held discussions in the national capital and outlined the provisions of the draft rules prepared by Tamil Nadu to safeguard State-specific welfare measures.
Officials said the State had drafted its own rules with a focus on labour welfare, social security and the functioning of labour welfare boards. After obtaining the necessary clearance from the Union government, Tamil Nadu will formally release the separate draft rules.
A few days earlier, Labour Welfare Minister CV Ganesan had informed the Assembly that the State was in the process of framing draft rules following the Union government’s notification of draft rules for the four new labour codes.
The Union government has notified draft rules for the Industrial Relations Code, the Code on Social Security, the Code on Wages and the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code. Tamil Nadu, however, has opted to frame its own draft rules, taking into account all aspects, including worker welfare and schemes implemented through labour welfare boards.
