CHENNAI: The long-pending railway line project between Tindivanam and Tiruvannamalai has been revived after nearly 18 years, with work now gaining momentum, said a report by Daily Thanthi.

The 70-km rail line via Gingee was first announced in 2008 at an estimated cost of Rs 1,400 crore. Although approved by the Railways, the project remained stalled for years due to delays in land acquisition, with around 229 hectares yet to be secured.

The lack of progress had earlier dampened interest from railway authorities. However, with a steady rise in passenger movement along this corridor and increasing freight demand, the project has regained priority.

Officials said the new line is expected to cater to both passenger and goods trains, improving connectivity between northern and central Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu government has now stepped in to facilitate land acquisition, removing a key bottleneck that had delayed the project.

With these developments, railway officials confirmed that work on the revived project is underway and is expected to be completed by 2028.
