Third time lucky, Veerammal at 79 becomes Arittapatti chief

Age is just a number for this elderly woman who emerged victorious from Arittapatti village panchayat of Melur union in Madurai district. Much to her delight, 79-year old Veerammal, native of the village, bagged a total of 749 votes in the poll and achieved victory by a margin of 193 votes against her opponents.

Veerammal was one of the seven candidates contested for the post for the village panchayat post, sources said. Veerammal was third time lucky in 2019 as her earlier two attempts at the local body polls proved to be failures. Despite defeat, Veerammal kept her hope of becoming the president of Arittapatti and her confidence and strong belief in her capabilities paid rich dividends this time. A beaming Veerammal received the winning certificate from the election authority standing as a proof for the saying age is no barrier. Veerammal is full of promise to render services to her fellow villagers with the support of government welfare schemes.
