CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday announced that all schools across the State would reopen on June 4 instead of June 1 for the new academic year due to heatwave conditions prevailing in the State.

According to the announcement by the School Education Department, all schools, including government, government-aided, matriculation and private schools, will reopen uniformly on June 4.

Earlier, the department had announced that schools for Classes 6 to 12 would reopen on June 1, while Classes 1 to 5 were scheduled to resume on June 4.

Officials said the government revised the schedule after receiving several representations from parents, teachers and other stakeholders requesting a common reopening date for all classes.

Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre’s (RMC) seven-day forecast indicates that the maximum temperature in Chennai will hover around 41 to 42 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature will dip to 29 degrees Celsius until June 1. On May 30 and 31, the maximum temperature is expected to rise to 42 degrees Celsius, with the minimum temperature staying at 29 degrees Celsius. The sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy, and light rain may occur in some areas of the city.

Till May 29, the coastal areas of the state are likely to experience discomfort due to high maximum and minimum temperatures combined with high humidity.
