CHENNAI: The northeast monsoon has entered its final phase in Tamil Nadu, with only isolated spells of light to moderate rain expected over the next few days, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, said on Sunday.
Due to variations in easterly wind speed, weather conditions are expected to remain largely dry across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on Sunday, with light mist likely at a few places during the early morning hours.
According to a Daily Thanthi report, on Monday, light to moderate rain may occur at isolated places in the delta districts and Karaikal, while the rest of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are likely to experience dry weather with early morning mist.
On Tuesday, light to moderate rain is likely at a few places along south coastal Tamil Nadu, delta districts and Karaikal. Elsewhere in the State and Puducherry, dry weather is expected to prevail.
According to the forecast, light to moderate rain may occur at a few places in southern Tamil Nadu and isolated locations in northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on December 31 and January 1. On January 2, rainfall activity is expected to be confined to isolated places in southern Tamil Nadu, while dry weather is likely across northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
The Northeast monsoon season in Tamil Nadu runs from October to December and is now nearing its conclusion. The monsoon commenced in October and brought fairly widespread rainfall across the State this year.
The impact of Cyclone ‘Ditwah’ led to heavy rainfall in delta districts and parts of northern Tamil Nadu, while Chennai also received widespread showers during the season.
Between October 1 and Saturday, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry together received 42.8 cm of rainfall against the normal average of 43.7 cm. With a few days remaining in the season, there is still a possibility of limited rainfall activity, the weather report said.
