CHENNAI: The State government on Wednesday further 'clipped' the powers of Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi as an Amendment Bill was passed to amend the Tamil Nadu University Act of 1982.
According to the Bill, named as the Tamil Nadu University (Second Amendment) Act, 2022, the expression "Chancellor" has been substituted by "Government" for the purpose of appointment of vice-chancellors.
Already, the State government has passed amendment Bills for 12 State universities to transfer the powers vested with the Governor to appoint vice-chancellors to the State government and the Bills are still pending with the Governor.
Under the circumstance, a similar Bill was passed where the power of appointing vice-chancellors has been taken away from the Governor and has been vested with the government.
The vice-chancellor will be selected by two nominees of the State government, one will be the retired judge and another will be an official of the government not below the rank of Principal Secretary to the government or an eminent educationist.
