Student commits suicide, police case against two professors

Police registered a case against two professors of a private college in Thanjavur for instigating a student to commit suicide by ridiculing him.

Meera Maideen (21), a resident of Anna Nagar in Thanjavur, who was pursuing third year BCom at Annai Velankanni Arts and Science College, was reportedly speaking with the girls in his class. Professor Sangeetha, who noticed it, asked Meera Maideen to sit alone in the class on March 5.


When Meera went to the professor and asked the reason for making to sit alone, the professor reportedly scolded him in front of the other students. Professor Sangeetha also took him to HoD Mahesh, who also asked Meera to bring his parents. Dejected over this, Meera had reportedly consumed rat poison on the same night at home. Suddenly, he fainted and so his parents rushed him to the Thanjavur Medical College hospital where he was undergoing treatment. However, on Wednesday night, Meera died despite treatment.


On Thursday, the students and the family members gathered in front of the hospital and raised slogans against the professors. Later, Thanjavur Tamil University police registered a case against both the professors, who went absconded. Meera’s body was handed over to his parents.
