Karuppiah (47), a farmer from Mazhaiyur near Alangudi in Pudukkottai district, went to his field on Wednesday around 7 am along with his pet dog.

Karuppiah used to go to the field early for preparatory works before other farmers reached the field and a local breed pet dog was the sole companion during his morning visits to the field.

Due to heavy rain and wind on Tuesday night in the locality, an electric line crossing across his field had snapped. Unaware of it, Karuppiah, who was walking along the field accidently came in contact with the snapped wire. He was immediately electrocuted. Seeing him falling down, his pet dog rushed to rescue Karuppiah. But, the dog too got electrocuted in the effort.

When neighbours came to the field, they were shocked to see Karuppiah and his dog lying dead. They later found that they were electrocuted. Soon, they passed on the information to Mazhaiyur police.

Police retrieved the body of Karuppiah and sent it to the Pudukkottai GH while the dog was buried near the spot.
