Podhigai express derails, leaves 45 minutes behind schedule

The Sengottai-bound train's delay had a cascading effect on the other trains.

CHENNAI: The Podhigai express that was to leave for Sengottai was derailed while replacement works were going on in the train's engine.

The train arrived at Madurai railway station at 4:15 AM on Wednesday. While the engine was being replaced under the Coats bridge track it suddenly derailed.

But the situation was immediately brought under control by the workers. Railway stations nearby were alerted about the incident to control the arriving and departing trains accordingly.

The Sengottai-bound Podhigai express then left after a 45-minute delay and also had a cascading effect on the other trains as well.

The railway authorities are probing into the incident.
