One killed 10 injured as lorry ploughs into people at bus stop in Chengalpattu

One person was killed on the spot, and more than ten others, including a city bus conductor sustained serious injuries.

CHENNAI: A 60-year-old man died and more than 10 people were injured after a concrete mixer lorry mowed people waiting at a bus stop near Chengalpattu on the National Highway on Thursday.

The concrete mixer lorry from Maduranthagam was heading towards Chengalpattu when the mishap happened. In the early morning, when nearing Pulipakkam the lorry driver lost control of the vehicle and knocked over the people who were waiting for the bus in the Pulipakkam bus stop near the NH and then stopped after ramming into an MTC bus.

On information, the Chengalpattu Thaluk police visited the spot and found Kumar (60) from Pulipakkam who works as a cook in Tambaram died on the spot. Further, the bus conductor and more than 10 people who suffered injuries were taken to the Chengalpattu government hospital for treatment. Police said the lorry driver abandoned the vehicle and escaped from the spot.

A case has been registered and a search is on to nab the driver who is missing. Following the incident, traffic was affected on the Trichy-Chennai National Highway for a while in the morning.
