CHENNAI: After recording below-average temperatures for several days, the city was scorched by blistering heat on Sunday.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, recorded above-normal temperature in Nungambakkam on Sunday, and issued a forecast that the hot weather will continue for the next two days and rainfall may occur at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, but dry weather is likely over Puducherry.
“From June 3 to 7, light to moderate rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The sky condition in the city may remain partly cloudy, and light rain is likely to occur in some parts of Chennai,” said the forecast.
Madurai airport recorded 40.7°C, and in the plains of Tamil Nadu, Karur Paramathi recorded a minimum temperature of 22°C.
The spike in temperature on Sunday was particularly telling, as it came after several days of lower maximum temperature – by as much as 4 °C on some days.
“Normal rainfall for June in Chennai city is just 59 mm with four rainy days. But something has changed in the last three years. Never in 200 years of data could I see such a change in trend. The June rainfall recorded in Chennai has been excessive over the last three years and by above 300 per cent. It will be the same this year. Intense spells are likely in KTCC (Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chennai, and Chengalpattu), while other districts may not receive rainfall. Chennai will be hot on June 1 and 2 with temperatures soaring above 38°C,” said weather blogger Pradeep John, popularly known as the Tamil Nadu Weatherman.
