CHENNAI: The DMK and AIADMK councillors filed a petition with the Kancheepuram collector to disqualify the Mayor Mahalakshmi Yuvaraj, belonging to the ruling DMK.
The Kancheepuram corporation consists of 51 wards. Mahalakshmi Yuvaraj who belongs to the DMK party was elected as the Mayor of the Corporation.
However, a group of DMK councillors were not satisfied with the appointment of Mahalakshmi Yuvaraj. There were many problems with the councillors and the mayor.
The opposition party councillors claimed that the Mayor is not supporting them in developing their wards. The involvement of the mayor's husband in the corporation works also made the councillors angry.
The councillors a few months ago met the corporation commissioner and requested to disqualify the mayor since she lost the majority.
Even during the last council meeting, only 13 councillors accepted the mayor's invitation and participated in the council meeting.
Following that after the Model Code of Conduct was lifted, a total of 33 DMK and AIADMK councillors visited the Kancheepuram collectorate on Friday night and submitted a petition to disqualify the Mayor since she lost the majority of supporters in the council.
Though there are 39 DMK councillors in Kancheepuram Corporation most of them have now turned against the DMK mayor.
